For the Love of Sertoma

Just 3 weeks ago, Sertoma Centre learned that one of our two most critical fundraisers, the Super Sale, was not going to happen this year due to concern about the possible spread of the then new Coronavirus that originated in a country far away from our shores. At that point in time, we had no idea that the virus would grow and spread to the point that has directly impacted not only on our revenue streams, but the very lives and safety of consumers and their families, our staff, donors, volunteers, board and friends of Sertoma Centre.

Surely there has never been anything this crippling to happen in our nearly 50 years of dedication to the community of people with disabilities. For the first time in our history, there are a significant number of staff unable to carry out the work they have dedicated their careers to.

The staff has pulled together in commendable, unselfish ways to keep services going within the mandated limits, both remotely and on the front lines. Members of the Community Mental Health and Counseling team are delivering food and essential items to the homes those who have mental illness and can’t get out. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are in Sertoma Centre’s residential homes providing healthcare, recreation, and comfort to those with I/DD around the clock.  DSPs who worked in our day programs have volunteered to assist in providing that critical care in the homes. An employee purchased board games and delivered them to the homes of consumers so they can keep their minds busy during this time.

The IMPACT of  COVID19 on our services supporting people with disabilities is devastating. Day programming at our Community Mental Health and Counseling facility (CMHC) and our facilities serving those with I/DD have been shut down.  CMHC’s Living Room that provides assistance to the homeless during evening hours has been closed. Sertoma’s janitorial service that brings sorely needed revenue is practically at a standstill, unable to provide service to companies that have closed in response to the pandemic. Additionally, our second fundraiser is now threatened with cancellation.
